The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil is a project of the Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions.  This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased access to imported energy.

What is a Transition Initiative?
· It all starts off when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: how can our community respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil, Climate Change, and increasingly, economic stagnation?
· The basic idea is:  if we collectively plan and act early enough there’s every likelihood that we can create a way of living that’s significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment.

What's This All About?

It’s an ordinary day. You climb into your car, turn the key, and drive to work, school, the grocery store, the mall, the library, the park, the beach. If you don’t have a car, you walk or take a taxi, and don’t plan to go very far. You probably use oil or electricity, maybe gas or wood, to heat your home, cook your food, run your computer, and turn on your lights. Your clothes, dishes, vegetables, and furniture probably come from very far away.

We all know that the way we live right now depends on fossil fuels, particularly oil and coal. We also know that climate change is fed by the use of these fuels. We know that we are using up resources that cannot be renewed. So, what can we do? The situation seems too big for any of us to address.

Not so, say the organizers of an upcoming event entitled The Power of Community: A Creative Gathering for a Sustainable Future, to be held at the NSCC Truro campus, McCarthy Library, on Sunday, February 27, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

‘When we gather as a community and pool our wisdom, our practical skills, and our creative strengths, we can actually create a significant shift in a fairly short time period,’ noted Juliana Barnard, a member of the Living Earth Council, which is hosting the event.

‘We encourage everyone in the greater community to come out and join us in thinking about how we can meet the big challenges of our time, how to create a way of living in which we are more connected with each other and more in touch with our environment,’ Barnard said. ‘Together, as a community, we can go far beyond the sum of our individual efforts.’

The Living Earth Council (LEC) is a grassroots organization based in Truro, active since early 2007. The group hosted a workshop last May on the international Transition Movement, and decided to continue exploring the possibility of starting a Transition Initiative in the area.


The afternoon event includes a film, The Power of Community, refreshments, and an Open Space Forum on creative ideas that groups of individuals can explore together. In addition, a free children’s workshop will be provided on site, featuring activities such as planting seeds, making bird feeders, tips on saving your own seeds, and other creative nature projects.

Registration for the Transition Cobequid workshop is now officially open. The workshop will be taking place on Sunday, February 27th from 1:30 - 4:30 pm at the NSCC Truro Campus in the McCarthy Hall. A free children's program will be taking place during the workshop, so your little ones can also be included in the day's events -- the more children the merrier! There is also no cost to register for/attend the workshop.
